Bakewell dates from about 1300 and has a large stall market and cattle market every Monday. It is famous as being the home of the original Bakewell Pudding, as well as having a varied selection of shops for browsing.
Ashbourne has some wonderful old buildings dating from the 13th Century and a good selection of shops. Market days are on Thursday and Saturday. It is famous for its two day Shrovetide football game with goals 3 miles apart and almost no rules.
Buxton is only 10 minutes drive, it is a Georgian Spa town with some wonderful architecture, it is home to the Opera House with a regular and varied selection of entertainment. It also has a good range of supermarkets including Morrisons, Waitrose, Tescos and Sainsburys
Leek is also less than 10 minutes drive and has stall markets every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. It has a Coop and Morrisons and some excellent antique shops situated in old mill buildings as well as an award winning Bangladeshi restaurant, Bolka Spice. Just out of the town is The Abbey Inn, a very old Inn with a good menu.
The historic village of Hartington is also within 15 minutes drive with its famous Cheese shop.
